Fireplace Conversion Projects Wood-Burning to Efficient Gas
Are you tired of hauling wood for your fireplace? Or maybe you wish you didn't have to clean all that soot and ash from the firebox? And, say what??? Your ol' wood burning fireplace is simply not the best or brightest or even certified option these days.
Understanding the Investment
Embarking on a gas fireplace installation or converting an existing wood fireplace to gas is a significant financial undertaking. Costs can fluctuate widely, ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on the scope of the project, the type of fireplace chosen, and any additional work required. Given this substantial investment, it is paramount that homeowners exercise due diligence in researching and selecting a qualified professional for the job.
Vetting Your Contractor
A reputable contractor will readily furnish proof of their credentials and insurance coverage. Don't hesitate to request the following documentation:
- Certificate of Insurance (Liability): This protects you from financial responsibility in case of accidents or property damage during the project.
- Workman’s Compensation Insurance: This covers medical expenses and lost wages for workers injured on the job, preventing you from being held liable for such costs.
- County Business License: This shows that the company is registered and authorized to operate in your local area.
- State Contractor’s License Number: This verifies that the contractor has met the state's requirements for education, experience, and financial responsibility.
Beyond these essentials, take the time to investigate the company's reputation. Scour online review platforms, seek out testimonials from past clients, and compare estimates from multiple contractors. Remember, you're not just making a financial investment; you're introducing fire into your home. Compromising on quality to save a few dollars could have disastrous consequences.
Navigating the Permit Process
The installation of a new gas fireplace or the conversion of an existing one necessitates obtaining a permit from your local county or city.
- Contractor Responsibility: A competent contractor should be willing and able to manage the permit application process on your behalf. If a contractor asks you to pull the permits, it could be a sign that they lack the necessary qualifications or are trying to circumvent responsibility.
- Chimney Inspection and Certification: Many jurisdictions mandate a chimney inspection and certification by a licensed professional before issuing a gas permit. This step ensures that the chimney is structurally sound and free of obstructions that could impede proper venting.
Verification of Contractor's License: Before entrusting a contractor with your project, confirm that they hold a valid license and possess the requisite qualifications to obtain the necessary permits.
Ensuring a Safe and Successful Installation
- Subcontracting: If the contractor plans to subcontract any portion of the work, request the subcontractor's information and verify their qualifications as well.
- Installer Certification: For optimal safety and performance, it is advisable to select a technician certified by the National Fireplace Institute (NFI).
- Gas Supply: When adding a new gas appliance, ensure that your existing gas meter can accommodate the increased demand. A qualified professional can perform a gas load calculation to determine whether your gas meter needs to be upgraded.
- Clearance to Combustibles: Adhere strictly to NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines and local building codes regarding clearances between the fireplace and surrounding combustible materials. Failure to do so can create a fire hazard.
Online Purchases: While purchasing a gas fireplace online may seem tempting, many reputable installers will not install units bought online due to potential warranty and liability issues.
